Approach

Contemporary Chinese is a constantly changing language, which means what you learn in a textbook from the 80s might not be the same as what people are saying nowadays. It is also a very subtle tonal language, so it can get a little frustrating if you are practising all by yourself, without an actual teacher to explain to you the differences. Language exchange is a good idea, but at times you start to wonder about the real meaning behind those sounds.

This is where systematic study comes in. I believe learning Chinese is not just about imitating the supposedly “impossible” sounds and tones. Once you learn to read the characters, you will find a whole new world opens up for you. By teaching basic radicals and characters along with pinyin, I will help you get beyond the first steps of "ni hao" and "xie xie", and show you a culture that has so much more to offer than chopsticks and misinterpreted tattoos.

The textbook I use is called "Learn Chinese with Me", a Chinese textbook written by Chinese teachers and published only in China. For more advanced learners, I also provide tailor-made lessons and free reading materials that suit your level. Whether you are looking for Chinese-only conversations or specialized writing classes, all you need to do is send me an email with your requirements. At the moment, I only provide lessons for small groups and one-on-one, but you do get an opportunity to meet other Chinese learners if you take part in our monthly events. For the latest updates, please check the homepage regularly.
